I dont have an 81, but ill take a shot.

The slot with the little saw like teeth on it tells me that slides into something plastic and the teeth grip it.

Looks like a harness connector support that would then be tapped to something else to support the connector body or maybe the slot goes into the body of a plastic relay to hold on to it?

Maybe someone with an 81 can take a look at their under dash. Maybe that would hold up the column turn signal connector under the column or maybe the ignition switch connector under the column?

My 69 doesnt have anything like that good luck.

I'm not too sure if it has anything to do with turn signal. I thought it did at first because I was having trouble getting my turn signal to function correctly when putting it back together. I took the housing apart and back together three different times until it finally worked right. Then I had trouble putting the telescopic retainer on because the screw for the switch actuater was preventing the locking plate from compressing all the way. Again after about an hour of pulling it apart and compressing I flipped the spring the other way around and it worked, kind of silly if you ask me. Then the same screw was preventing the column from freely spinning. After even more tear down and putting it back together it miraculously functioned correctly.

Right now its still apart until I finish installing the borgeson unit. That gear box was a tricky one to fit in around the headers. Can't complete the job until the new pitman arm comes in, had to use a hacksaw to get the other one off. :/

I'm still puzzled by this part though, I've seen no kind of replacement for it online and the column is fully functioning. And I am 100 percent sure this came from the column, I just don't exactly where, it was next to the turn signal lever or the tilt lever hole, don't remember which one. It was freely dangling around in of one of those holes before I pulled the column apart.

It's a dust cover that goes near one of the levers . It's an original part which says no one has been in there before . I found 2 pieces in a virgin 72 TnT column a few months ago . I think they all had them until someone pulled it apart and threw away those bits. No way I can remember just how it goes back on .

That's what I was thinking, but like you said, can't figure out how it would sit back in place. I feel like it's for the turn signal lever as it has a bigger hole to it and its large enough to cover it.

Seems to be it, im not taking it all the way down to add it though. If its just a shield then it shouldn't be a problem.
