Hi,
I have a Corvette 81 with an idle problem.
Very often the idle speed is around 1200/1500 rpm.
Some time it is around 650 rmp.
I have this car since one year, I had always the problem.
The carb was rebuilt with a kit, but nothing change.
The original air filter and all its connections was remove by the last owner, and replace by an EDELBROCK. The electric chocke was removed and the carb was lock, also by the last owner. The 81 carb is very special, because there is a coil inside, witch is regulated by the EGR system.
Could some one know how to solve my problem?
Thanks

I'd say have Lars take a look at it. I think you need that electric choke as well as other items to ensure the carb is functioning correctly. Lars works magic.
unless you just gotta have that stuff removed and keep having problems, you can buy the new carbs from GM, but you'll need a loan, last I checked $1200.00. I see rebuilts for about a little less than 1/2 that, quality?? The ECM reads from the solenoid in the carb (Delco doesn't make anymore), temp, choke and O2 sensor etc. If things are removed, it isn't getting proper signals. May be why the fluctuations. I would suggest you get a srevice manual and a assembly manual and start replacing parts. I got a spare carb reasonably $$ at Carlisle and rebuilt it, now it sits on the shelf. I am sure someone on this board has done away with all that, but in a emission state I am not talented enough to get rid of all that and have it pass. Good luck
I'd guess that your problems is with the choke. The way you describe things your fast idle was also disabled. If you need to pass emissions then you should try to find another carb, or the parts to fix yours. The GM shop manual has the information you need to rebuild and tune it. You can get the special tools from napa fairly cheap (<$30). If you don't need to pass emission it would probably be cheaper and easier to remove the ECM and replace the carb/distributor with standard ones. There are many threads on the forum dealing with repairing or removing this system. You can search the forum by clicking on the search link in the menu. Plus there are quite a few people here who have '81s that can help

Re: Idle problem on my 81 (christ)
A carb "KIT" will not get rid of the most common idle problem around; that is an air leak at the throttle shafts. A quadrajet rebuilt correctly will have bushings put in the throttle plate, so that vacuum leaks are corrected. When they get real loose, the shaft will move enough to where it will idle different each time the throttle plates are closed, because they stick.
