okay, im doing my research here. i currently have a th350 in the car now and i want to have overdrive. i have been reading past post have a few questions. first will a 200r4 stand up to 470 hp/518tq? ihave looked at bto transmission and i will need at least a level three right? which is aprox $1200 so what else will i need? i have there is about $600 dollars worth of extra parts i will need. does anyone know if this is correct?
second train of thought. why not put a manule transmission in it. i have located a t-56 transmission with 34,000 miles on it it is for sale for $1200 dollars also. will this transission hold up? what i dont know is what all parts will i need to convert over? any of you guys that have done this can you please inform me of what it takes? also is it that complecated of a job? thanks for any info. i dont have much time to buy the transmission he will only holdit for me about a week.and i dont know which way to go, man. or auto. thanks again for any information.
I found the hardest part of converting to a standard from an automatic is installing the pedals. It involve removing the steering column, the drivers seat which are easy enough but then you lie half in the car or half out upside down on your back and remove 10 bolts. Most are easy enough the on might take a whole evening.
After the pedals are installed the rest is easy enough. At the wreckers you can pick up a bellhousing. I went for the hydraulic clutch and a 85 one ton truck master bolts right in with only a linkage modification. The hole and mounting bolt holes are already drill in the firewall cover by a cover plate.
If you buy a bellhousing for a hydraulic clutch slave cylinders are readily available.
The driveshaft must be shortened but here again it is a easy cheap job for any driveshaft shop..
I went the TKO route after removing my 700R4 and really enjoy shifting. Makes you feel more like you are driving.
Fun factor really went up.
Ok. Can you list the parts needed? how much did it end up costing you for all the parts? Where did you find purchase them? I'll try but probably wont be able to do all the work myself. Thanks.
It makes a difference which flywheel you have. If you are using the large 14 inch with an 11 inch clutch you need a truck bellhousing. I used a 85 one ton truck. If you go for a smaller flywheel a normal camaro hydraulic clutch bellhousing will work.
I picked up my 85 one ton truck bellhousing and from the auto parts store bought the 85 one ton slave cylinder that bolted right up, a 85 one ton master cylinder that with only a slight linkage change bolts right up.
I also had to weld a short extension to the front of the removable cross member. Forgot you also need a short piece of brake line to join the master cylinder and slave cylinder.
It was not a costly swap but the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate was the major cost. Also forgot the pedals are costly. About $200 for a set of pedals.
The bellhousing cost $50 used, the slave cylinder about $70 and the master cylinder about $100.
