77 vette. Stock rear end.
I just installed new side yokes (axle stubs) because they wore past the C clips.
The car is off the floor, tires removed.
When I turn the driveshaft, the side yoke and the half shaft hit causing the hub to bounce upwards (see picture).
It only happens on the right side of the rear.
The ujoint is installed correctly, the bearing caps are correctly positioned.
Wassup? Anyone seen this before?
Is there a right and left axle stub?
Can the short shafts be reversed? Interference on these two points when the shaft is rotated
I have the same problem. And it is just fine when the suspension is loaded, but it still doesn't seem like a good scenerio. Does everybody just leave it alone or should you limit the suspension travel some how? Or maybe grind alittle more relief into the halfshafts or the side yoke? I can't imagine the racers leave that potential interference issue. Thanks in advance for any advice.
The racers are not allowing the rear end to leave the ground, in fact I can not think of any situation where it would, unless you are driving 90 in San Francisco on Lombard Street. Chevy engineers never worried about this so no use to overthink it.
I've seen the inside rear tire come off the ground plenty of times on tight road course racing. The suspension goes to the limits of it's travel often on even on a regular street car.
A racer would use careful shock extension length to control the drop or even add limiting straps.
Binding a u-joint at speed would easily cause it to snap/bend.
