While I was blasting my half-shafts today, I clumsly mixed up the tags identifying which end was which -- OOPS!
I believe that both shaft ends are just about identical (except for markings, to my eye they are), so does it matter which end is inner or outer?
The yoke ear end caps of the shafts have numbers and letters cast into them. One shaft has an end that reads 670775 GM178A RY while the other end of that shaft has 370775 GM178B RY. The second shaft has the same pair of markings on it.
Does it matter which end of the shaft (A or B) is the inner? I haven't found any info describing this in any of my manuals...
They were not balanced and were fine. Now I would look close at them since many were crushed in a vise in the past and show compression marks below the yokes. The driveshaft is balanced.
Gary,
Half-shafts don't show any signs of damage (vice or otherwise) so I'll reuse them on either side in either orientation. As for the driveshaft, it's a good thing I didn't "lose" the orientation tag for that since it's balanced.
Thanks again,
Paul
BTW, PM coming regarding rebuilding my steering box...
