This is what really happened...
So why wasn’t the cylinder firing? It was all my falt... There was always plenty of spark going to the cylinders. It wasn’t the distributor cap or the rotor or the spark plug wires although I replaced them all. It was the fuel mixture. I messed with the fuel mixture screws on the Quadrajet and it was running way too rich. Carboned up plugs 7 and 5 and lost power in one or both of the cylinders... In the process of investigation I discovered a couple bad wires and a deteriorated distributor cap. I was so disappointed when changing those didn’t make any difference. It was still running like crap. Then at the advice of some forum members, I decided to check the plugs even though they were fairly new. That’s when I found the carbon caked plugs. Then it made sense... I cleaned the plugs with a wire brush, reinstalled them and we hooked the Vette up to an emissions analizar. I am lucky to have a friend who owns a car dealership with some great mechanics. So with their help got the carburetor properly tuned. Long story short, my 71 is happy and running great, I’m happy and learned a lot along the way... Now I can enjoy that feeling once again when you get in your Vette, look out over that hood and step on the gas and take off... Thanks to everyone that helped...
