Years ago when I swapped out my L48 I left that ugly box on the passenger side of the motor that houses the AC lines and heater core..
I got around to removing it over the weekend..That and the charcoal canister I took out on the drivers side weighed in at 45 pounds between the both of them....A buddy of mine removed the charcoal canister and it was weighed down with a bunch of crap ....It was on the car since it left the showroom..
Not judging, I don't either right now, but I do have all of the conversion parts from a non-AC car to add heat (only) and have a working defroster. Only the blower fan really weights anything. Getting rid of the AC components saved most of the weight.
Everything is gone....Tell you the truth I even removed my convertible top.....30-40 degree day with Windows up you get So much heat from the motor through that paper thin firewall .....Not that I make it an everyday habit in the winter....
I did the same thing years ago and I have never missed any of it. My car is far from a daily driver so if it is too cold, too hot or raining - I don't drive it. Getting rid of all that clutter under the hood, and the weight, has a lot of advantages.
Fiinished product...Well, sort of..Have to touch up my headers with high temp paint and take a buffing wheel to the valve covers.....Over 40 pounds of unwanted weight gone...Plus another 35 w composite spring....Car is level on both sides in back and ride is still very good..
My 69 Convt has been on a weight loss program for 43 years...now at 2950# The only thing I added 'back' to the car was the heater/fan assy....too freaking cold and nasty in VT without it.
My car was 'special', Copo type car ordered thru military procurement. NO PS, PB, Radio, Heater, two tops, M-21, L-46.
In the subsequent years it's now a clamshell one seater, NO top (at all) No right seatbelts, YJ8's, fiberglas spring, no spare and tub, strippie.
You CAN get down to 2850 if you leave the bumpers and brackets off, the grille surrounds and overriders, Braille battery, etc etc. Now it's down to counting ounces...not pounds!

Under 3,000 lbs is impressive....I think I dropped just under 400 lbs over the last few years...
John...wasn't all that bad..started at 3300. SMALL BLOCK MANUAL, Convt.
Right now anything more is 'raping' the car, such as full wiper, washer assy and actuator delete, Monza headlights, hollow anti-sway bars... not a race car now....was then!
Ordered at Pensacola Naval AB for auto-x at the base...F-4 Phantom pilot (heaviest twin turbo-jet ever made!)
Funnily he ordered the PO2 hubcaps because the rally trims and caps was Twice as hard to take off on the weekend.

Cheers Unka.

With the egg crates removed, it is much easier to reach into the fender area to service the AC, or fuel vapor canister, or whatever else is tucked in there. That doesn't help the 73-79 cars much, though. I agree that the gills are the best look.
Okay, i'm confused. Did the items/weight you removed count as AC weight? or is it bonus weight that is not considered when calculating AC weight. By that, i mean the factory manuals say that 'AC' weighed 99lbs in 70, dropped to 80lbs in 74, then to 63-7lbs in 78, then even more in 80. Are they counting what you removed? Do non-AC cars have these same parts?

I'm guessing AC weight consists of all AC components ( compressor, Condensor, hoses and such).....I have the old compressor in my garage, I'm going to weigh it....That thing is heavy !!!.....With just what I removed recently plus the charcoal canister was about 40-42 pounds ....The charcoal canister was weighed down by what looked like sand my mechanic buddy said...
When you remove a bunch of weight from the car do you find you have to reevaluate the springs and/or ride height? It would seem like it would rise up a little with a couple hundred pounds off. I would imagine the springs and shocks are related to the weight of the car.
Well I replaced the springs! and used the 8" long spring hanger bolts in the rear. I.25 " shorter in front. 50/50% of 350 lbs is 175 lbs front or rear.
YAH Sure....don't want to make the car look like your Granny lifting her skirts to step over a puddle! LOL.
Shocks are basically un-affected. I have jounce and rebound snubbed gas Bilsteins all the way around...which are so much more superior to the Jounce ONLY Delco Units.
I say basically...Gas shocks have pre-load (like 60 lbs)...so yes technically this 'raises' the car...you can't actually measure it tho.
