Hey guys, I want to switch out the Hurst shifter currently on my car and replace it back to the original Muncie linkage. It has the original Muncie 4 speed. Can someone tell me if I can do the swap with the tranny in the car? Things look a bit tight in there. I realize that the shifter bracket will need to be replaced back to stock as well. Maybe someone can enlighten me as to the process and what all I will need to remove to get this swap completed. All advice and comments much appreciated. Thanks 69 roadster.
You should be able to do it without removing the transmission because before removing the transmission you have to remove the shifter.
After you remove the old shifter the original bracket is attached to the crossmember and then the shifter is attached to the bracket. Install and adjust the rods last.
I swapped in and then later swapped out the Hurst shifter. Actually sold it for a profit. There are people that want those shifters. The guy I sold it to said I had one of the better ones as they'd changed the design somewhat since mine.
That was probably 20 or more years ago, and as memory serves, it just felt flimsy. Did not have to take out the transmission. I do believe though that for access convenience you need also get in at the console area, possible to tighten that one bolt that secures the linkage assembly. It will be obvious when you get into it.
It would be good before you get too far to make up an adjustment tool for the linkage, grease the whole business and inspect for any cracks. The adjustment tool was for me just an aluminum flat filed to the right size. My old linkage had a cracked casing, certainly couldn't have been me slamming through the gears. I would never do that!
One other thought, some lateral adjustment of the transmission on its rear mount may be necessary to keep the rubber boot roughly centered. I believe I've pushed mine towards the passenger side a bit.
OK, Thanks for that Ignatz. I am now officially determined to do this. I have all the major parts I need like the original shifter , bracket and linkage rods and levers. I just need to get the clips and washers. I already made up a neutral centering tool so thats covered. Also gonna replace the upper and lower boots so some work in the console area is on tap for sure.

the bolt that goes through the center of the shifter to hold it to the bracket can be a hassle to install. I would do a preliminary bench install to make sure you know what goes where. its hard once your under the car and everything is upside down. If you have the stock shift levers that bolt to the tranny that have the to linkage holes, use the hole closest to the bolt, it will give you a shorter throw and better feel.
If i remember correctly I had to pull the console to get the bottom boot off to get my hand down in there to tighten that bolt from the top
