Can't get the blower motor or wipers to work in my '73 C3. Tested most of the systems: all switches are good, relays are new, motors work, fuse is good. I read on this forum that grounding is common to both and can be easily messed up. Went under the car today and saw a large ring terminal on the bell housing with a wire stub coming out of it (see pic) Disconnected ring terminal on bottom of engine near starter. Is this where the blower motor and wipers should be grounding to?
Thanks!
Not sure about the 73 but on the 72 the smaller ground wire from the harness is on the bellhouse bolt that holds the main positive cable clip to the starter
Then the larger cable is the chassis to engine block connection
Thanks for the info! Today I used the ground on the alternator to ground the windshield wipers and the blower motor. Both worked! So it looks like one of the POs had the ground going to the starter.
Only problem is.... I can't get the blower motor to stop blowing. All speeds on the switch work fine, but the "off" position on the switch does not turn the motor off. There's no difference from the lowest speed to "off". I tested the switch last week (using Willcox's directions) and it tested fine.
I did notice that the plastic housing for the connection to the relay was cracked. Maybe two wires are touching, even though I tried to isolate them with electrical tape. The relay is new so I doubt the relay itself is causing the problem.
If your car has AC installed, you need to turn the left thumb wheel to the OFF position to stop the fan. If the left thumb wheel is not in the OFF position, the blower runs at low speed even with the fan speed switch set to OFF.
on my 73 there are 2 relays (open contacts) master and comp . Mine was stuck on and blower ran all the time. Bought from one of vendors and fixed problem
