Default 68/69 #1 body mount reinforcement

I am relatively new to the corvette world and I must say this forum is fantastic. Currently I am in the process of swapping a small block for big block in an early 68 and before the engine goes in I want everything I can access at this point to be fixed or replaced, cleaned and painted. The #1 body mount reinforcements will be replaced and the backing plates appear to still be in there original place. I have been searching on this forum for a way to replace the backing plates (no access). Some members have used pop rivets to reattach and that is a possibility for me. I can get my finger tips on the backing plates through the interior vents but it would be impossible to hold a new backing plate in place and rivet or bolt it. This may sound crazy but it seems like if I was to cut out the one side vent (shark gills) that is blocked off, I would have clear access to the backing plate for the #1 body mount reinforcement. Any opinions on this? Once cut out, its my understanding that if will affect cabin ventilation, however, if it were a clean cut it should be easy to epoxy back and blacked out with paint. Am I crazy or does this seem possible to anyone?
