Its not imposible but its alot easier. To do the job you need to:
1.) remove distributor
2.) remove intake manifold
3.) remove water pump which means alternator, A/C compressor brakets, fan and belts.
4.) removeharmonic balancer and timing chain cover
5.) remove timing chain and gears
6.) remove valve covers, rocker arms, push rods, and lifters
7.) remove cam ( may need to remove radiator to have the rome)
8.) put it all back together
Pulling the motor doesn't take that much more and makes putting it back together alot easier than leaning over the fenders.
Since you have to disassemble almost half the engine just to get at the cam,and it would be much easier out of the car,why not pull it and rebuild the whole engine.Cost a few hundred more, but worth it IMO.You'll spend more time wrestling with it in the car than the whole rebuild could take out of the car.
Eh-huh... Did mine with hood on. Had to have wifey hold it about 1/2 down to slide the cam out
Took about 1/2 a day (not the 1st time I've done this in a car) then let set for sealant to set.
