Can anyone please confirm if this is the correct starter/pt# for my 1971 Ls5 OEM points IGN car.I keep reading about an (R) terminal?
(I found this through the search function ....but would like to confirm before purchase)
Did you go to the DB Electric website to check if that is correct for your car, including whether automatic or manual transmission?
The stock starter solenoid has the main battery cable connection and an R terminal that goes to the positive side of the coil and an S terminal which goes to the ignition switch.
Starter pictured has R terminal . It gives the ignition system battery voltage during cranking instead of running through the resistor wire from ignition switch like after it starts
That looks like the same starter I put on my 496. Can't say a thing bad about it, it cranks the BB just fine. Not running but 10.5 compression so no really big cranking load. I did carefully check the starter pinion to flywheel clearance before I put the engine back in the car. Having the "R" terminal is no big deal. If you don't need it for your application, just tighten the nut so you don't lose it. Another plus is it's way lighter than the stock hi-torque GM starter.
The picture you posted does not look like the PMGR starter-- The description lists the same part number as the one on DB's website
