I've had a tapping noise coming from the rear of my 79 for some time now.
The noise is a knocking or tapping noise that only happens above 2500 or so RPM, and is loudest when accelerating or decelerating. Running temp has no effect. The noise is just as loud when i just start it as it is after being run up to high temps.
I thought that it was my fuel pump and or fuel pump push rod, so i threw on an electric pump. Now I know for sure that it isn't the fuel pump, cuz it's still happening. I also tried changed my rear diff fluid, and added 2 bottles of posi additive. This didn't help either. I also tightened up the exhust manifold bolts, on the suggestion of the forum, thinking it was an exhaust leak.
Any one have any ideas on this? Could it be the rear spindle bearings? Maybe my trans? I only hear the noise when the windows are up and it seems like it is coming from right under the rear storage/behind the seats.
OK, this is waaaaay out there but I have seen Corvettes that have been bumped from behind and have had the frame kinked oh so slightly in to the point that the halfshaft will rub or 'tap' the bottom of the storage bin when it is rolling. Is this possible with you? We only found it on one car when we took out the storage bin and drove around a bit without it.
I don't think that's it. I checked clearences around all drive shaft parts and looked for anything that might be hitting, everything looks fine. Also, i grabbed onto just about everything i could think of, and everything seemed tight. w/ very little to no play.
