Hi all,
could someone please advise me of how to get the end of this cable back onto the pin on my 72 Corvette?
I can’t seem to pull them closer by hand when laying under the car.
is it throttle position and or gear shift position?
it’s a small block 350, 3 speed automatic.
thanks
Phil

That’s not a detent cable . Unfamiliar with your year but that’s more like a ignition lock to the steering column. Detent cables are not connected to the shifter cable in anyway at all
That appears to be the steering lock-out cable. I don't recall if this first step is necessary but, turn the key to the on position and then manually swing the lever at the engine side of the steering shaft downward. That should extend the cable in the sheath somewhat. Then place the trans in D to extend the connection pin forward. Both of these movements should be enough to get it connected.
Thanks for replying.
I’ve been looking at manuals and on line to see exactly what these parts are? Still no idea, but as there’s a pin and an eye about an inch apart I guess they should be joined together so some reason?
Great thanks, I will give that a try tomorrow. I can feel the pin has a small hole at the end so I will put a split pin through it if I manage to get the eye onto the pin?
Put the transmission in park, ignition switch in locked position, twist the sleeve around the steering column by hand all the way counter clockwise and you should be able to connect the cable.
Thanks all for your replies,
can I just confirm my stupidity by asking if I can get these parts reconnected what it will do?
it starts and changes gear just fine at the moment!
So my 77 did not have this cable, and I can check the Assembly Manual, but I believe GM stopped installing these at least in 77. Does anyone know if this is so?
Secondly.....what is the primary purpose of this cable and lock? The 69 has it, 77 didn't.

The purpose of the lockout cable is to keep you from being able to turn the key and lock the steering wheel while the car is still in motion. If the car is not stopped and is rolling or driving and you locked the wheel you would be unable to steer it and avoid hitting something. I think the later years used a safety lock lever on the column that has to be pressed to remove the key and was used in place of the lockout cable.
