Welcome! you picked a good year.
I'm dreaming of a crate motor some day too. When you do it, keep us informed of how the transplant goes, and any pitfalls to look out for.
This is truly the greatest Forum in the universe. :iagree:
Ask anything, don't be afraid...
The more you try to get out, the more they suck you in...
Sound like something you've heard before?????????? ;)
I can still remember when I joined this forum back in 99'. I did not know anything about cars or vettes. Still don't but I try real hard. You will have lots of fun learning how to work on the car. Listen to the advice of the forum members and you will truly enjoy the vette experience.
Welcome aboard! I have asked myself the same question, and of course the answer is up to you. If you intend on selling the car as a numbers matches low mileage perfect resto, park it in a plastic bubble and don't touch it.Otherwise do what makes me happy. Modify what you want, drive the hell out of it,and enjoy it for what a Corvette was made for. :flag
glad you finally made it - I too have a yellow '79 that I aquired last year.
I have the same question as you - but me personally, I'm not worried about a numbers matching car just yet. I don't want to get rid of the motor, but I'd like to put in a ZZ4 motor or something of the like, like some of the other memebers have done. I'm waiting for after Christmas to order. I want to keep all the original smog stuff to make it look original, but obviously, I don't want the original horsepower :) - The things that I'd suggest "beefing" up, would the be U-joints in the driveshaft/half shafts, and possible rear end rebuild. Not sure what gears you have, me, I"ve got the 3:55 gears, and plan to keep them, they have good overall performance. Possible suspension depending on what power you're talking about. Don't want the rearend too stiff, otherwise you'll get a lot of tire spin -
Welcome to the board - you'll learn loads here, I did!!!
I'm personally going with my own custom rebuilt engine and stroking it to a 383, which a lot of guys here have done. As long as you don't want to go too nuts with the motor a GM Performance Parts ZZ4 or Fastburn 385 should suit your needs. Try the Scoggins-Dickey website, they are a GM Performance Parts dealer and have just about every crate engine GM makes. Good Luck
thanks everyone! :smash: as for an engine i think ill try a large sb. i dont have much experience except with the 350's but i have a very patient friend of the family who loves working on motors( and he does actual work for BEER!)
