Re: Best exhaust system with headers on a sb...??? (HDIronman)
Dynomax Ceramic Headers and Chambered exhaust. You can have a conversation or listen to the stock AM/FM while cruising. When you get into the throttle, all hell breaks loose :reddevil
I get at least one complement on how the car sounds every time I take it out.
Gotta love it.
Re: Best exhaust system with headers on a sb...??? (HDIronman)
Dare to be different! Don't be a sheep.
If you want a really deep tone bad sounding rig get 3 inch true duals without cats with 3 inch in and out Vortec stainless packed race mufflers.
I drove it around for 2 years like that and just a couple of weeks ago added a three inch H pipe under the diff. Where the pipes are very close together.
The chrome tips are 3 1/2 inch. so I can blow out the rice cars!:)
Re: Best exhaust system with headers on a sb...??? (HDIronman)
I am 57 years old and love the deep sound of a powerfull V8, always did always will. I also like side pipes. I may be deaf by the time I am 60, but I will deal with that when the time comes. My 74 is very stock looking and has the fiberglass covers painted black. So the overall effect is very stock look. Untill you start it. It alway gets a serious look from who ever is in hearing distance. The setup is Hedman side exhaust headers into a 3" collector and 3' pipe connected to the collector. The mufflers are 3' in 3' out Moroso 4" diameter race mufflers. Great Sound, but not for the faint of heart.

Re: Best exhaust system with headers on a sb...??? (HDIronman)
First of all...VERY nice car. I have Dynomax ceramic coated headers and 2.5" duals running into the Flowmaster 40's with an H pipe right behind the tranny area. They sound killer but truthfully I don't think they have that nice growl that chambered systems have, I kinda wish I went with the chambered pipes but after ~$450 into the exhaust I'm sticking with what I have...for now.
Re: Best exhaust system with headers on a sb...??? (ED DINAPOLI)
I'm with Ed Dinapoli  On all three inch systems.
The 3 inch deep sound:) I had 3 inch in and out probably 5 inch diameter by 24 long glass packs for 10 years. That's what is shown on my web page pictures where the tips are down turned to appear very stock. But when you fire the motor it will bark at you. You can feel the individual cylinders fire five feet back at idle

Too bad about your 186 castings!:( i installed a set of them when my 79 was just a few of years old to get some compression with my new .030 over flat tops in a L-82. Really nice power when they are all intake ported with large D port exhausts.
Yes, you have to be a genious and modify your cross member or buy one. It would be smart anyway to install a removeable from Bowtie OD. The cross member has to be thinner where the three inch pipes comes straight back from your collectors and under the new cross member.

I since have purchased another set of #186's from forum member "999". He gave me a good price and they now are sitting in my living room. I intend to rebuild these heads and put them in the basement, since I've already installed the World Heads. The 186's are in case I ever decide to sell the car, (yeah right).
Re: Best exhaust system with headers on a sb...??? (SIGNGUY)
exhaust isnext for me too...i have Flowmaster 40's and am buying Dynamax headers...
my where did you buy your X pipe and is there really much more of a gain over an H pipe?
I bought my X-pipe from Jegs. It's made by Hedman also, it's the "x junction only", they have both 2.5 and 3 inch versions. The part number is 500-18820 for the 2.5 and is $92, the number for the 3 inch is 500-18840 and is $99. The X's definately make more power than the H's. I read a dynotest article in Car Craft where they tested open headers, an H pipe, and an X pipe. The X made as much as the open headers  :yesnod: , worth it in my opinion. Everyone says X are hard to put on a vette, :bs , my mechanic said it was no problem at all. I'll try and post some pics of my setup ASAP. The X is right in front of the rear wheels.
Re: Best exhaust system with headers on a sb...??? (HDIronman)
Try to get it in aluminized-steel pipes that way it won't rust as easy. If your looking for something inexpensice but good get the Headman headers and the Dynomax super turbo mufflers.
A few words about the mufflers I get many compliments, it really has that 1960 muscle car kind of sound. Also they won't rob you of any time at in 1/4 mile. :yesnod: Plus they rumble but you can talk, even on the highway.
The Dynomax ceramic headers would be the next step up in headers, that's what I orginally ordered but they were back ordered.
Re: Best exhaust system with headers on a sb...??? (HDIronman)
Sound is personal preference. With a small block the Dynomax Super Turbos are the sweetest I have heard. The more pop the motor has,the better they sound but it takes some miles to run them in.
At 400hp these are plenty with 2.5 pipes
Re: Best exhaust system with headers on a sb...??? (HDIronman)
I'm running Dynamax Headers into 2.5" pipe...Dual Hi-Flow cats... 2" crossover...into Flowmaster 40's. A bit loud in the 1K to 2K range for a 50yr old, but very cool in the upper R's.
HI CURTIS...HOW YA BEEN???
