Default Help me find a ring and pinion..........

Fellas.............I normaly hang down at pr&c. But I bet you guys have changed gears in your 1982 ... dana 44.
So help me find a ''thick 3.73 set for everyday driving. (cheap).
And a shim kit (cheap).
It now has the standard 2.87 ring and pinion I 'm guessing.

We's in calif. just ready to slide of into the pacific. Please o please......

ramair.

Tom's Differentials for good parts, if you want cheap just order off Ebay or Amazon for Chinese crap. R&P made in USA may not be available anymore, Chinese junk install kits are about $100. I just spent $600 on my USA made parts for my '79 - choice is yours.

Figured they were all china by now.
The thing with e-bay, when I do the ''see if this fits your car'', It always says no.
Even when it is the product advertised. Heck, I'd buy it if it was a for sure deal.
Good prices.
So this is why I could use some of your wisdom.

p.s. No slicks, no stick, rarely drive it, but maybe now I'll burn the tires.................
pp.ss. I installed a th2004r. It's scream'n for 3'73's now.

Quality of the bearings. If you are keeping the car I would highly suggest USA bearings but you might get lucky.

How many times do you want to do this job? Using cheap parts on the rearend is almost certain you will be underneath it again in short order.
The other thing is that if you have a stock engine......a 3.73 gear will come hard out of the hole but the engine runs out of breath at 4500rpm so it will shift a lot faster but won't be any faster.....if it were me I would go with a 3.23 or 3.36......the 3.55 is stretching it IMHO......even with the OD trans.

Yes, I had to think about all that a while ago.
Sure don't want to do this twice..............

I should have said.... this is a 3rd member from our donor car.
I can do this one, and change back if needed.

One way I decided on 3'73's, our firebird with a t-5 uses a 3'73 posi.
The t-5 is a wide ratio spread on gear changes. low first, good 2nd, 3rd. big drop on 4th.

The 2004r is a close ratio 4 speed auto with lock up on a toggle switch that acts like 5th...............
Gear changes are evenly spaced. This is the way god intended........

You got'a ride in it. Just needs lower final drive to make thing happen quicker.

Watching trumps defence going on right now. Dang....they wiping the floor with the dem's. Go turn it on. You may not be able to see it again.
Back later.

Haven't called summit about a shim kit. looks to expensive.
I'm ok with a e-bay kit if you know the one it needs.
Just shims and a seal is good.
They are $20-50 bucks!

Now your talk'n...................

You guys can point one out?

Dem's got it handed to them today. go trump.

Yanked the 3rd member out of the donor stingray this afternoon.
2;87 it is.
I was getting my hopes up when I saw some writing on the bottom case.
Cleaned it off I did .
Turns out it was in pencil, and is no more...............

Likely it was rebuilt at some point, but with standard ratio.
I'll split off the bat wing tomorrow after I give it a bath.

First I have to give the dog a bath.
After watching The impeachment trial, Even the dog needs a bath......................

Stay tuned.

Removed all the bearings and races. It all looks so good.
If I could reuse the timkin's with out wreck'n em, I would.

Didn't remove the axle rollers . I'll replace the seals though.
there is a minumum number of .010, .020 amd .030 shims.
Thought there would be a lot more
.
After lunch I'll zip off the ring gear bolts and remove the gear.
Keeping everything in order as it's removed and cleaned.
Then it's on the phone to summit......................That was a good recomendation....

Buddy of mine who is a jeep crawler dude, is going to freak when he see's a aluminum 44.............
Said he may have shims I need.

I agree with those saying not to go with 3.73. You'll have about an 11.5 final ratio. I went with a 3.54 which was OK with the TH350 at about 8.9 final ratio. The sweet spot with the 700's 3.06 first would be a 3.36 which will give a near perfect 10.3 final ratio . But they may be hard to come by. When I tried about 5 years ago the only set I found was from Spicer as a full kit.

3;54 it is.
Even with the slip of the converter, I'm sure it'll be a great improvement over the 2;87.

Zip!.........
excellent display. Easy to understand too.
Other sites are difficult to understand if it's what I'm looking for.

You'd have to cut those prices in half to be competitive though.................

Well I'm not selling the same junk you are getting on ebay. First of my bearing kits or Timken, they are built for us. The gears are motive and that was pretty recent, it wasn't long ago that they were still Dana.

I have 3:73's in my differential. But also a TKO 600 with the .64 od. Honestly 4th gear, 1-1 isnt that bad at 65, still under 3000 rpm. Around 2000 in 5th. I have a set of low miles 3:55 gears bolted to a posi. I may put it up for sale as I went to a Toms 12 bolt conversion. Anyhow, the 3:55 gears were pretty good. Stock was a 3:33 with my wider ratio muncey trans. I personally like the 3:73. It gets out the hole pretty darn well.
