Speedometer Cable Install Advice
I replaced my 1973's speedometer cable after finding it burnt and lying on top of the exhaust. After two attempts, the speedometer is still dead (It worked previously. I know, maybe I should redefine, "broken"). When I took a second look at my install, I hadn't gotten the speedometer end fully inserted into the clip. I got it firmly installed into the gauge but, it still doesn't register a speed.
Before I go for a third try, I wanted to write and ask for any advice on the transmission end. All I did was reinsert the drive gear and bolt on the retaining clip. Is it really that simple? Is there a way to confirm that its engaging with the transmission? Should I try a power drill on the drive end to see if it registers on the speedometer? When I put the drive gear on the cable and turn it by hand, I feel resistance but, am able to turn it. I can't clearly see the cable's route behind the dash. Maybe double check it's straight with no, "loops?"
Thanks for any help!
P.S. I greased the cable before installing it.
