I've been told by my local mechanics that I need a new gas tank, and a few folks here have said if it's leaking and has a broken strap it should be high on my priority list.
Looks like I can get a kit that includes everything I need and if I order today it's 20% off
Found 2 kits, this one and another that's more expensive. Reading the description I couldn't tell what the difference between the two was.
I called Eckler's and they said one is for the LT1 engine. Why would a specific engine need a different tank?
Anyway, the one I need is of course the more expensive of the two, but still not bad for everything you need, right?
Is it worth the price for this kit?

It's $100 more from Quanta, I mean, it's not that large of a delta, but is Eckler's really that bad?
Not being snarky or anything. I'm still new to all this.
I'm not sure. I was told it was leaking by one of the mechanics I took it to. And it definitely has a broken strap, he pulled it out from under my car and said, "this should probably be replaced..."

I would ask them who their tank supplier is, Quanta is a quality product.
Why did your local mechanic say that you needed a new gas tank? Just because it's leaking doesn't mean you need a new tank, depend on why and where it's leaking. BTW a broken tank strap will not cause the tank to leak.
I can't tell you anything about the leak. Mechanic said it leaks, I don't know anything about the mechanical side of cars. I just know what I like and how to drive them.
Taking it to another place for suspension work. I'll have him look at it and see what exactly the issue is while he's all up in there.
There is only a few places an installed gas tank can leak;
1) Top driver side area where the evaporation emission control (EEC) separator valve is mounted. This is usually due to a dry rotted hose going from the tank to the separator and can cause a gas smell in the garage or the appearance of a leak when gas is sloshing in the tank. New rubber hoses is the fix for this.
2) Top of the tank at the filler neck attach point. This is caused by a breakdown of the gasket at the filler neck attach point and can also cause a gas smell in the garage or the appearance of a leak when gas is sloshing in the tank. New gasket is the fix for this.
3) Passenger side bottom of the tank where the gas gauge sending unit mounts. This is caused by a breakdown of the o-ring gasket at the sending unit attach point and can also cause a gas smell in the garage or the appearance of a leak. New o-ring is the fix for this.
4) Lastly actual holes in your gas tank due to age. These are normally located in the floor of the tank due to rust and present themselves as little pin holes and can be seen pretty easily.
If it's holes in your tank be it bottom or side areas than you should also have puddling of gas (leaking fuel) on your garage floor. If your not seeing gas spots on your floor under the gas tank than I would question needing a new tank.
I understand you don't know anything about the mechanical side of your car and must rely on your Mechanic to be a straight shooter with you, however than doesn't mean you cant be informed on how a system works and have an understanding of what components make up that system.
