Who knows about the new 8.1L BBCs?
Basically through a friend i have the possibility of getting a 8.1L rat for arround $500 from a friend who works at a GMC Dealership. he said it would be a core, meaning i would need accesories, wiring harness, and ECU, but other than that its is complete. he said most often the cores have blowby, or a slight rod-nock, so i would have to at least do an overhaul. but if i increased CI by bore/stroke, and did some kickass heads/cam, i could have one mean **** motor for pretty cheap.
my question is, i know nothing about the new BBCs. are they 2/4/6 bolt mains? are they tall decks? if so, could i fit it in my vette if i got a diffrent brake-booster? i have an L-88 hood, so i should have clearance. i know i would need custom motor-mounts and possibly a new bellhousing, but thats not a big deal. whaddya think? could i drop a new big block in the vette with no/very little problems?

The January issue of Hot Rod magazine has one page of info. on it.
Oops! That one works out to be 9.4 L (572 cu. in.)
8.1 L (494 cu. in. ?) Are you talking about the 502 cu. in.

There was an article in Corvette Fever this month about crate motors, and I believe the 8.1 was in there. Check that article out.

I had one in here just yesterday in a Silverado. Couldnt' get any parts for it!! i was trying to do a 60K service on a 2001 (!) but couldn't get hoses, plug wires, darn near anything at all for it without ordering from Lansing MI and waiting a week! :mad
Engine sure was cool though! I had just pulled the 350 outta the Vette and I was tempted!

My friend has one. 340 hp @ ~4500, 425 lb-ft @ 2500? Something like that.
Definitely enough to break axles once you fix it up a bit. He says it's great for towing it in his boats. It's in his 2001 Suburban.

yea its not much more than i have now (besides the awesome torque curve!) but once you get a decent cam and some good heads, im sure that thing really wakes up.

Check out the GM specs site:
http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpower...ec8100_l18.htm
BTW, for those interested, 8128cc = 496 CI.
