I pulled apart my telescopic wheel on my 76 in order to put in a new ignition. When putting it back together I got to the point of needing to put the "u pin" back on. As the picture shows it needs to be pushed down over the center bolt/shaft. The metal trim ring needs to be pushed in so the u pin can fit correctly. Can anyone tell me if there is a specific tool or tools for this and if so what are they called? Trying to get this pin back on has been very frustration so I am really hoping there is a tool that will help. Thanks in advance for any help.
I had this issue. I had to go under the hood at the steering U joint and push the rod farther into the fire wall. This gives you more room for the clip.
Rent or check somewhere like harbor freight, should be pretty cheap and chances are you only need it once or twice so probably don't need the snap-on one

You will need the tool shown and mentioned above, but it is not designed for the tele column. So you'll also need an Allen screw the same thread size as the star bolt and screw in place to lock the tele rod so it won't move when you install the tool.
This is the one you need, it does the telescoping type too. The center bolt of the tool screws into the shaft to lock the tele scope, the other adapters in the kit are not needed. Lock plate tool
First thing you need is a bolt about 1inch long with the same thread as the star screw.screw it in to lock the telescopic part of steering then put the tool on and screw it down far enough to put that u clip on very easy and do the same thing to remove u clip
Hi, you can easily make your own tool for almost nothing... that’s what I did as it’s not easy to find these dedicated tools quickly and cheap here in France.
So, you take a steel plate, make hole in the middle so that the star screw thread will pass through but not the head.
Then you drill and tap 2 additional holes on the side and put 2 long screws.
To use it, it’s easy, you unscrew the star screw, put the plate and put back the star screw. Then you screw in alternatively the 2 outer screws to push the plate and compress the spring until you can install the clip.
