77 L48 with stock engine. Replaced oil pan with repro and used Felpro (thick) one piece gasket. The pan looks like it's not long enough to mate correctly with the timing cover lip. The previous pan was a repro pan that the previous owner put on and used tons of RTV to seal the front. It still leaked. The timing cover looks to be properly in place. Am I wrong about the fit? Maybe it's not supposed to seat in the timing cover lip. The picture is without the gasket cause I wanted to get a better look at how the pieces fit together. The pans I've used are Spectra Premium GMP08A from Advanced Auto and Dorman 264-104 from Summit. Both were less that 70 bucks and both were identical in fit. Thoughts? Better pan to use? I would like a stock look and no chrome.
I think when I removed my oil pan and purchased a seal, I read there were 2 different sizes of seal that went around the front,,, one thick and one thin. Also there is different radius seal surface.

there are 2 different sizes for sbc oil pans and they pertain to the front seal gap. I cant remember the year of the change but the small front seal is for the older pan, the large front seal is for the newer. I also had a Milodon pan and they use the thick seal, they also sell there own seal. I used the felpro one piece thick seal and it solved my issue. On your pan being short, thats different. must be becasue they are both chinese cheapies. I would look for a stock OEM pan (original equipement manufacturer) or get a used premium pan like Milidon, Moroso, ...etc. Ives seen alot of nice used pans on market place and ebay lately

It is definitely the timing cover that is the issue here.......the front pan lip is flush with the front of the block and so should the receiver lip on the cover.....in your picture, you should not see the channel at all.....it should tuck in further......this is the big reason a SBC pan should be removed or lowered to remove the timing cover......
Use an Allstar 90010 timing cover.... https://allstarperformance.com/sbc-t...over-all90010/

Your timing cover may be bent outward a bit. Some times Bubba will try to remove the cover without dropping the pan down first and it gets bent. I would try a different cover.
Nope....your camera angle is straight down and that lip is bent out.......Also, the likelihood of two pans being manufactured improperly is very low.
If you could get a sideways shot, you could confirm it.......it will be pretty obvious.
Buy a new cover.

I decided to try and bend the timing cover. Figured what the heck. Seems to have worked. The first pan I bought was definitely crap but the Dorman pan from Summit seems to fit good. I think I’ve got it pretty close now. Thanks for all the help!

Installed the pan tonight with the thick one piece felpro gasket. Was able to bend the timing chain cover to hopefully it’s correct position. Seems to fit like a glove now.
I might be having the same issue, I know this was posted a few years ago but do you remember what you did to bend the timing cover?
I ended up buying a different oil pan and very carefully did some hammer/dolly work on the timing chain cover. No leaks now. Can't remember where I got the oil pan.
