Default Engine Code

Trying to solve a mystery. The engine code is clearly V06"I"8HT The I being a capital letter I not a 1. I know the V is for Flint, 06 is day, HT is for 350 HP high performance. But the I ,,,, If it was 18, then maybe 6/18,,, June 18, but then there isn't a year. I guess the year is in the other number stamped on the engine, 186423359. So did Chevrolet run out of the number "1" stamps?
I have nothing else to do today.

On the VIN are you sure it is 186423359 and not 18S423359? If it is an"S" it is a 1968 HT 327/350 VIN would be 194378S423359.

I think you are correct. Kind of hard to read, but it is an S. Matching numbers car.
