I've been trying to find a bypass pulley to temporarily mount in place of my AC. All I seem to find are serpentine types. Does anyone have a lead on a v-belt type. It's for a 1980 L82.
Have you considered installing a belt from a non-AC application from an earlier year, perhaps 79 AC was optional.
That would probably work. I roughly measured the OC around the crank, power steering, and fan pulleys. I say roughly because the PS and Crank belts were on, but nothing was on the fan pulley. The OD was 44 in. which is the belt length listed for a 1970 vette w/o AC. I may give that a try. It won't balance the load, but then apparently that was not a concern back in the non AC days.

Go to your auto parts store and buy 3 or 4 different sized belts based on 44" and longer shorter in 1/2" increments. Keep the one that fits and return the others. I did it this way because trying to match a corvette belt from other years was a waste of time for me.

I hate the parts stores as you get sexually harassed (I can't say raped) on the price. When I was getting all the new belts for it a couple years ago decent belts were so cheap at Rockauto, most for under $3 on closeouts, I did just you said. Then just kept the extras. For a one-sy here and free shipping on Amazon, I'm taking a chance.
install old compressor? it will just free wheel..
i have great luck with oreillys all USA made gates.. and easy return..
i also have the close out rock auto belts..
I want a second belt to the fan/water pump for backup
Look up the secondary belt for non-A/C application......went around the W/P and Crank pulley only, no tensioner.
If you don't like that idea....use a C2 idler pulley.....

I was going to suggest the same thing.
From the OP's other thread about knocking from water pump:
"A few days later my brother was visiting, first time in over a year, thank-you covid. I cranked it up for him as he probably hadn't heard it run in 20 years at least. It had a new noise that I located to the AC pulley. I guess it just decided it was time for it to be an issue. The AC hasn't worked for years anyway. I really only kept that belt on as a water pump and fan backup if the alt belt failed. Also, it seemed to be nice to have some balance of tension on both sides of pulley system. But in any case, the car actually is much quieter without the AC pulley turning and not because of the new noise. So, for now I'll leave that belt off. I might see if I can get a belt to just run from the lower to the upper pulley unless someone knows of any reason that's not a good idea."
Notice Alan 71's front belt from water pump pulley to crank pulley.

I would assume that's only 2 belts but my service manual shows 3. Belt 1 goes around crank pulley, it only hits about 1/4 of the waterpump pulley and goes around the alternator pulley. Its adjusted from the alternator bracket. Belt 2 goes around the crank pulley and the water pump pulley. It has NO adjustment. Belt 3 goes from the crank pulley to the power steering pump and is adjusted from the power steering pump bracket. The belt I don't understand is Belt 2. I have never.... in 38 years of working on cars have ever installed a belt that had no tensioner or mechanism to adjust the tension on it. Although they show this belt in the service manual is it actually necessary?

It appears that is what is making the noise even when just free wheeling.

That's what I did, looked up the non AC belt. It arrived yesterday, so I'll see if it fits and update tonight, hopefully.

I saw also a belt routing diagram that had a belt from the bottom to the top pulley. I guess that without any adjustment the only way to get it on would be to have the top pulley off, slip the belt around it and then pull like hell to it onto the WP drive studs under some tension. Option 2 for sure.

It's not that hard to install the WP to Crank belt. The important thing is to get the right size belt.
If you owned a Big Block, you would be installing that belt on the rear grooves.

71 green, thanks for looking into the use of a belt that just runs between the bottom and top pulley.
I did work with the belt which I found listed for the SBC power steering, crank pulley, and water pump/fan. It's an AC 15435. It fit well, so that should work for now.
