Can Am Crunch Time
Does my Can Am have any real investment value?
Car is a matching Nos 73 BB turbo 400 convertable with h/top but has a Can Am body & BIG wheels, R/hand drive conv.
Minor engine mods - cam , carb ,extractors & duals.
Having been around the forum for about 4-5 years , the perception I get is that modified body vettes are really considered a novelty with no real investment value ( unless you build "Merlin" in which case you lose squillions.)
Changes in my situation mean I have a serious choice to make - keep the vette (at a re-buy cost) or sell immediately. Not a easy one.
What is the consensus?
Would anyone buy such a car?
How much would you pay?

 :cry :( :cuss :nonod:

I could never sell mine for half of what it cost me build. But I could tell you how much it would cost to duplicate mine. Go buy a 79 L-82 with a nice interior for $10-12K Install my motor, tranny, and rearend for about $15K. Put on $2500 of tires and wheels. Install a roll cage Spearco seat and 5 point harness for $2000. Put on a Datona front end and paint job for $8000

You can try advertising it and see what kind of interest there is, or if it's not worth you letting it go for a certain amount, by all means keep it !
I am sure where you are from, you are 'the' Corvette guy with such a beast. Its not about the money or all of us would be driving something else. Its what the car does for you personally. If I could afford to, I would definately keep it. :yesnod:

It’s a custom. Steve’s "Merlin" is by far an investment car because he said so himself, will never get what he has in it. I'm by no way bashing customs (I love them) but obviously as we restore our cars we usually go one of two routes customize (mild - wild) or factory correct. I feel that the world in general loves customized Corvettes and if done well, don’t affect value much at all however when you veer off that road of normalcy, opinions vary. As said above Corvettes are only worth what people are willing to pay for them.
Just my .02 Good Luck
The situation is a complex deal but to keep the car I will have to pay "market value" or sell.
Guess I'm trying to guage wether paying for the car again is wise ( depends if it will appreciate or not )
Definitely would like to keep it but it is not an emotional decision.
Currently values here are between $A 18,000 and $A35,000 for stock c3's.
i.e. $8,000 - $19,000 US
Have a bit of time to sort it out but Xmas / New Year period doesn't help.
