Default '70 LS-5 vs. 2000 coupe

who's going to win this race? '70 has an unmodifited LS-5 and standard 4 sp, 2000 is unmodified with an automatic.

IMHO it will be close - depending on ability to grip both cars will be mid-high 13s at ~102-105.

Remember that the A4 LS1 will always turn a good time. The '70 will have a hard time hooking up and then shifting right. If I were a betting man, I'd have to lay it down for the '00.

One factor that needs to be considered is tune. The 2000 will self-tune based on its fuel and other parameters that the computer reads. The 1970 needs proper fuel, it would need to be tuned to extract proper performance. I remember Car Craft did a LT-1 vs LT1 test back in 1990 when the new motor was coming out. The new car beat the old one. Vette magazine did the same test but this time they used the proper fuel, proper driver and had the LT-1 in a proper state of tune and it spanked the newer Corvette.

With a proper tune, driver and fuel. I would put my money on the older car.

If the 70 has better tires than what came stock on it and it's tuned and shifted properly, I would put my bucks on it.

As much as I love the BBs in this particular comparision I would have to go with the 2000 model over an LS5.

I havent seen too many...... no, I havent seen any mostly stock 70 LS5s at the strip and don't recall anybody posting times here. Even allowing modern tires on the 70 I dont think he stays with the LS1. (I sure don't !) If the guy with the old car starts putting on headers, a cam etc. sure, he gets into the 12s... but mostly stock, I dont think so. MJ

Interestng enough, Dave McLellan in his book "Corvette from the Inside" shows some comparisons of Corvette motors in terms of performance over the years but does not include any big blocks. He compares, an 84, ZR1, LT4 C5 and the Z06 showing 0-60 mph, 1/4 mile and top speed.

So for example, he lists for the C5 0-60 = 4.5 sec; 1/4 mile = 13.2 sec; top speed=175.

One of the other guys had it right though...the LS5 would have to hook up after squatting before becoming a projectile.

I know Corvette magazines have performed these comparison tests and it seems the stock LS1 takes on all comers except the ZR1.
