Default problem with passing gear 1972 corvette

When i stomp down on the accelerator to drop the tranny/ turbo 400 into passing gear nothing happens.
i checked the kickdown switch on the gas pedal linkage with a test light and there is power there when the ignition is turned on, and i moved the test light to the other terminal
and the light goes on when i manually pull on the kickdown switch. however i have to pull the little lever on the switch all the way down to get it to activate the test light.
I checked with a friend and he states that the kickdown switch must be pulled all the way down in order to activate and that some detent solenoids make a clicking sound and some dont
when activating the kickdown switch on the gas pedal linkage. Now upon investigating i found that the accelerator pedal linkage was barely touching the kickdown switch when i pushed on it as if accelerating
so i bent the linkage and it moves the kickdown switch about a quarter of an inch more but not enough to activate it. now my gas pedal is abnormally high and needs to be bent back where it was.
my feeling now is that the accelerator cable is too short and either needs to be adjusted or the previous owner replaced it with a too short replacement and needs too be replaced again.
Does this cable come out easily? from what i hear there is a bolt on the inside that comes out and the cable comes off from the inside?
I feel like im getting close to a solution but not sure if the gas pedal linkage needs replacing, bending or the accelerator cable needs adjusting or replacing.
anybody have any ideas or experience on what might be going on with this accelerator assembly?

I had a similar problem...forum members advised me to put a 1" rubber grommet on the round plastic rod that slides when the gas pedal is fully pressed.. The round grommet allows the gas pedal bracket to release the slider-rod sooner so you do not have to Stomp on the gas pedal. Stomping only makes the problem worse...you damage the cable to the carb,

NOTE: my switch may be aftermarket and work in the opposite direction that an OEM switch would operate.

Put everything back in place the way it was originally before you changed/bent the gas pedal arm. Make sure the butterflies open all the way when the gas pedal is pressed to the floor (Not Stomped) to make sure you didn;t damage the throttle cable.
Then
use superglue to hold the 1" grommet in place on the tan rod---you can also see the tan slider and the brown power wire and orange wire that goes to the transmission solenoid. I used a firewall grommet that pressed onto the rod/then added a thick o-ring to make it 1" diameter...superglue holds all the rubber parts together. '
(the camera is too close to see the gas pedal/arm which can now allow the gromment/slider-rod to move toward the firewall and send voltage to the kickdown solenoid inside the transmission)

Check to make sure the test light comes on when the gas pedal is pushed ALMOST to the floor with your HAND.

Let us know how it works (it is also possible the kickdown solenoid in the transmission is dirty/clogged/broken...but first solve the gas pedal grommet problem)

Thanks doorgunner,
thank you for your service.
Anyway i really dont stomp on the gas pedal, it was just a figure of speech.
i meant to say when i press all the way down to try to get passing gear.
i still have to check the cable, i wont be able to until tuesday or wednesday the car is in the shop getting a new stereo right now.
i will let you guys know what i come up with.
