Also, for the pins, do you just grind the top off and then tack weld it when reassembling?

Right or wrong, I'm not sure, but I did it and it worked. I can't remember if I was able to repair the other planetaries or not, it's been a few years. I'd say if you can get them apart without damaging the carrier or bearings you're golden.

My belief as well. I'm putting a rebuilt stock 1985 2004r tranny in my 1979 L-82. Not a Hot Rod, just a cruiser.

Your going to love your thc2004r.

Close ratio 4-speed.
All the gear ratios are spaced evenly, unlike the 700's.
Add a toggle switch for lockup.
Now you have a 5-speed.........

Change the rear gears to 3.73's so you can use 4th and 5th as god intended.

Throw the trans in the car. You'll cut the trans mount to fit, but thats about it.
Save the cash to pay the dana 44 ratio change out.

From your closeup pics, your in good shape so far. Will go many miles on a 3000lbs car
w/o race tires.
w/o race tires.
w/o race tires...........
