Dumb Question!
I know that in 1972 there were no gaskets between the head and exhaust manifold but when reinstalling, does the side of the gasket with the metal face go against the head or the exhaust manifold????

  When reinstalling, don't use gaskets. Factory didn't and they were not designed for gaskets.

Re: Dumb Question! (Tom73)
There were gaskets on the exhaust manifolds I removed. But I had to replace them...one was cracked! :cry

I made this mistake too. I thought it wouldn't hurt putting a gasket in there and I was wrong. One got cracked (blew out a section) causing a leak. I hate doing rework..

The Service manual for my 73's says it is 20 ft lbs with the exception of the "inside" bolts which should be 30 ft lbs.

Re: Dumb Question! (l2vette)
Would assume the two bolts around the center two ports.

Good assumption.
I would suggest tightening the inside bolts first to control any wrapage. That's probably why they have the higher torque specs for those.
