Mechanical fuel pump lever stiffness

This feels like one of those dumb questions so apologies in advance!

I just received my replacement Carter mechanical fuel pump for my 80. I could not resist attempting to squeeze the lever and see if it works. If I use both hands and all my strength I can barely make the lever move. Is that normal? I feel like if I install this unit it will suck 10HP from the motor just making it pump!

I appreciate any insights.

This only sucks 1/10th H.P. Carter Electric External (or buy one from Autozone-O'reilley/lifetime warranty

My Ford Ranger pump was similar and lasted 25 years.

Its normal. May try a carter electric one day I know they last and are quiet. i hate loud holley type pumps.
