ok, the whole perimiter looks a little fough on the crank flange. outlined in red. you could clean those burrs up with a dremel or even a right angle grinder as long as you don't hit the flat part. you may also be able to get the indicator to run on the blue circle just inboard of the 6 flywheel bolt holes.
Oh thanks, thats good to know I'm not that far off. I'll still investigate into it a little bit further, and also do those other things you suggested. I will also install the flywheel rotated 180 degrees and see if the measurements correspond with this change, if so, I'll know that it is the flywheel.
you can't. you may be able to get it on with 2 or 3 bolts to see if the high side stays with the crank or the flywheel, but the flywheel only bolts on 1 way with all 6 bolts. it is an offset bolt pattern.
Thanks derekderek. I did research that a bit before I attempted it, so saved myself a little bit of hassle of trying to do it. Also found a few threads on crankshaft run out issues. I measured mine where you indicated with the blue line, and it was .002. The low/high spots of the crankshaft correspond with the low/high spots of the flywheel, and the .002 would closely translate to .010 at aprox. 5" further out on the flywheel. Looks like it's gonna turn into a bigger job than I expected, but hopefully when it is done I will be able to enjoy driving the car without the awful chatter it had before. Some people have used shims to fix this and it was also mentioned about having the crankshaft flange faced at a machine shop. I think I will be removing the crankshaft and having it done at a machine shop, or possibly go with a 383 stroker rotating assembly.....
Also the low spot of the crankshaft flange just happens to be right where the grinding has been done on the crank, what a coincidence.......
Yeah, or the driver.... I found out later that the machine shop actually outsources crank work. The really kicker is it was just for a polish, and easily could have done without it, but I told myself "what can it hurt, just have it done"
check w/ all the regional real (crank grinding) shops. Sometimes folks fail to pickup heads/blocks/cranks and you can get a deal. Once got a 280Z head complete VJ & cam for just the labor.
