81 speedometer issue
Have a friend with this problem. Speedo doesn't work after the trans was rebuilt and a new cable installed. I disconnected it from the trans and ran it with a drill and the needle bounces to almost 5mph and that's it. Didn't run the drill real fast. Both ends of the cable look good. Haven't removed the cable from the cruise transducer yet. Is he looking at a Speedo repair?

Try unhooking from the transducer and running the short cable with a drill and see what happens, if you haven't already. If it doesn't work well, pull the cable out and inspect the square ends of the cables. Are they 'rounded' off (slipping inside)? Obviously make sure the cables are also fully inserted inside their respective bores ...in case one of them is too short and not fully inserted.
Can your friend put a finger or instrument (screwdriver, etc) on the speedometer gear in the tranny and ensure it's snug, and not in backwards?
