The original on the Motorama show car had the US flag. Not approprate for a production car so they replaced it with the fleur-de-lis. Lots of urban legands on why that was chosen.
The only possibility I can think of is that Louis B. Chevrolet was French.
:iagree: That was my theory as well
EDIT just found this...
"Where did the fleur-de-lis come from? At the time, Chevrolet was conducting research on various emblem designs for the 1953 and 1954 passenger cars. They looked at the Louis Chevrolet family history in an attempt to discover a crest or some type of heraldry that they could utilize. Unfortunately, they came up empty, but they did realize that Chevrolet is a French name and the fleur-de-lis (flower of the lily) is a French symbol meaning peace and purity. They decided to use the fleur-de-lis along with the famous blue Chevrolet bow tie on a new flag which replaced the American flag on the Corvette. When the 1953 Corvette first appeared to the public at the Waldorf Historia Hotel, the redesigned emblems were in place."
Close. The Chevrolet brothers were Swiss (from the French speaking part of Switzerland). The Fleur de Lis was indeed French, but in an interesting twist, they also branded it on shoulder of Adultress' after they were convicted. Fancy dresses were worn off the shoulder and thus the brand.
It kind of fits with my old vette - Hot tempered, likes to be rode hard, gotta watch her ALL the time...

Re: Fleur-de-lis symbol (Stephen Irons)
If you go to the National Corvette Museum, look around for a small emblem on the wall.
It was the original emblem for the 1953 Vette and shows an American flag.
Since you can't (protocol says your shouldn't) use the American flag on a commercial product such as a car, the emblem was changed at the very last minute, and just in time for the unveiling at the Waldorf wherever ...... :D
The full story is at the Corvette Museum, along with the VERY  looking American flag emblem. :flag
