Any experts here who can tell me what this cable entering the transmission is for? This is a 1971 L48. I’m asking as my reverse lights only come on as I shift from park to reverse and once I hit reverse they’re off. Could this be part of the issue? The fact the lights work at all leads me to believe they’re wired correctly, but that they don’t stay on when fully into reverse makes me think some connection inside the transmission to that sensor isn’t operating as it should. To be specific it’s the 2 wires leading into the transmission near the center of the attached image.

I would think your reverse switch would need adjustment. That cable may be your shift cable. Can you have some one run it through the gears while you see if it moves. YOur neutral safety switch would be out of adjustment if the car wouldnt start

How do I adjust the reverse switch? Are there any online guides you could point me to? The car starts and runs great through all gears so it doesn’t sound like a neutral switch issue per your note. If I have someone watch the cable as I shift what am I watching for?

The cable can be fixed later, your problem is the NSS switch is out of adjustment or gone bad but adjust first

They are one and the same switch on Corvettes with automatic transmissions like wiesleya posted in his pic. Only standard transmissions have a separate reverse switch.
