Well I changed the oil in the 80 l82 today. Fired it back up setting in the garage engine idling with the air on ready to pull it out and go for a ride. Then a loud screaming sound comes from the engine. I shut it off , checked everything over and found nothing . Started the engine back up, no noise for about 2 minutes, then the screaming came back. I left the engine running to try to find out the location. I deducted it was one of the V belts but couldn't tell which one. So I went around to turn off the engine again . As I got to the door there was a explosion , the AC hose blew spewing 134 freon throughout the garage. That stuff is bad. Shut off the engine and went outside till the air cleared. Found the hose going to the front condenser with a big hole in it. Question: did the AC compressor lock up causing the belt to squeal ? why would the AC hose become over pressurized to blow up. The AC was recharged last summer and has worked fine . It was changed over to 134a years ago. Now where do I go from here? Replace the hose is a no-brainer but what about the compressor?
cheap enough.. the 134 is not a mess but the oil is..
any debris flush and replace compressor.. consider upgrading sanden... or new equivalent..
no debris.. change accumulator fix hose, pressure check, pull vacuum.. recharge correct oil and 134.. use gauges.. and weight at about 80% of r12 weight of charge.
consider upgrading condenser as well ?
