I have had issues in decompressing them without collapsing once removed. I have had some success with using a deep socket to open them and constant downward pressure.

i would clean with brake cleaner, ultrasonic cleaner, degreaser, (insert favorite method). Then evaporust if any corrosion...(above 70f).. should be as new minus any plating and should work well unloaded..
