PS Control Valve Rebuild
Well my first try at rebuilding a PS Control Valve didn`t go so well. Maybe someone can help me with what I did wrong. I filled the system and started the car and the car turned to the right. No biggie adjust the balancer. Start the car again and this time fluid comes squirting out around the rubber boot. THIS IS A PROBLEM. What did I do wrong. And should I just pony up the bucks and just buy a new or rebuild again. I don`t really want to rebuild again but I will if it is possible.
IMHO is not worth rebuilding the control valve. Replace with a new one and you won't have any trouble for many years. Check the shaft on the ram cylinder. If there are any burs on it replae it also. I would also replace all the hoses. :chevy
Hello,
i just bought a 79 and the valve and the pump was leaking fluid all over so i took it off and my dad had a new one that he couldnt use on this 67(not original #'s) so i put it on my car. you can send in your valve to corvette central and they will send you a new one they are in need of cores
Eddie 96,
Hi there, I had the same problem with my control valve, rebuilt it and it leaked worse that before I rebuilt it. I went to Auto Zone and bought a rebuilt one for $49.95 plus my old valve. Its been on the vette for a little over 3 years now and no problems at all. Plus, its gauranteed for life. I know that most of the people on this forum don't like Auto Zone, but I have bought lots of things from them and never had any problems. :steering:
I did my 78 a couple of years ago and it went without a hitch. Now, I did use a service manual and followed the directions. It must be balanced and you did not mention that this was done. The assembly for the rebuild was straight forward...I may have even did a bench bleed...don't recall.
I would say though...this does require a service manual if you've not done before...but it's not impossible. you still have to balance even if you purchase a rebuild and install.
If fluid squirted out the boot...you didn't get it sealed properly. Check your hoses and be patient follow your tracks.

I was working on balancing when the fluid came out at the ball stud. The rubber seal at the ball stud is just to hold grease in not fluid pressure, correct?
The ball stud area should not have any power steering fluid in that cavity. I think that some of the rebuilding kits do not do an adequate job of describing exactly how the new lip seals and parts go together.
I made a special drawing with blowups to show just how the seals are supposed to be reassembled. You can go to http://www.corvettefaq.com and look under Steering. Download Control Valve Sliding Seals Pic #3. There are also scans from the Chevrolet Overhaul Manual Control Valve Overhauls Instructions #1 through #5.

Re: PS Control Valve Rebuild (Eddie 96)
Jim I sent an IM to you. This is what I found so far.
I think I found what was wrong with my control valve. One was the spring thrust washer somehow got fouled up and installed incorrectly between the coils. Got this corrected. Don`t know how I did it but I did. Ok, now I am looking at the exploded view of the control valve and I see an o-ring part #18. Mine didn`t have this and do I need it. I have read the Zip rebuild several times and it doesnt mention this o-ring that I can tell. What are the dimensions on this o-ring if you know. I have quite an assortment of o-rings at my disposal. If you let me know I can give this another try. Thanks.
Eddie.
Eddie,
I answered your instant message but I will add some info here as well. First of all, General Motors has a nut and seal kit still available for the control valve. It is part number 5687997 and any GM dealer should be able to order it for you. It lists for $15.71 and includes the torque prevailing nut to adjust the valve.
As I mentioned in the answer to your instant message. I scaled some reduced drawing in order to try and determine the size of the o-ring #18 that you say was missing. Gross calculations would say that it is 1.18 inch inside diameter with something between 0.070 and 0.090 cross section.
BTW, o-ring seal #18 should fit right into a cavity that is machined into the face of the valve housing.
If at all possible, use the GM kit because I know those seals should be the correct size and another thing, the correct material.
