I think the best 17 spline axles are International Axles. not sure if he is still making them though. It's been a couple of years since I got a set.
The common rebuilt axles sold by many places come from one source with inconsistent quality. I think most new axles are imported and the ones I have seen were also all over the place. If you go with rebuilt and get a good set they work fine but you have to check them, they should slide into the spiders without hammering, the snap rings should not be expanded in the grooves because the tip isn't machined correctly, the shields shouldn't fall off, tapped holes should have clean threads, and the face dimension you pictured will be all over. Some of them close to GM axles others off 030"
You need to check from the face to the ring, you're behind it. In your picture the dimension is probably 177" not even close to what GM axles were. There is no chamfer left so that axle is soft. Now depending on how you build the posi they might still work and you can have them hardened and reuse them without a splice in the end.
The diff was rebuilt or worked on before, you can see the witness stamps. Also that is not an Eaton posi it looks like a cone posi and they are not rebuildable or as good.
You push your car pretty hard so I would not be using that diff in that condition. You can look for a good used Eaton but stay away from 65-68's, 69-71 are ok but the 72-79 and NOS service cases are the best for most applications. New loaded Eatons are ok, I will be getting one in next week and post pictures on the quality if you like. Then there are the $4200 bare cases Mark Williams has.
I wish that I had a 4.11 or even a 4.30 and yes its getting the total rebuild with billet main caps. My existing installed 4.11 that I rebuilt has a whine on the load side. When you are out driving and shift into 5th gear it becomes noticeable whine. My long ago purchased HD 4.11 had a whine on coast when you let off the gas and was loudest when compression braking.
George I got around 0.198" on the axle tips on three sets I had, and that was with no c-clip, just from the groove to the top. Those were 69-72 axles.
Another set was worn all the way down to the circlip groove, that was a mid 70s one, like a 77.
You might still be able to locate a set of 433's for a 3 series case. Are you going to use that posi? What type of steel cap are you going to run and are you doing the machine work? A RH steel cap is not needed.
You can step up to 30 spline axles as well, while the NOS Tom's spiders are long gone now ( I still have some) the new Eaton spiders will work and I would use them over the Dana spiders on the market.
I have the Tom's stage 7 17 spline posi in my running 4.11 with super yokes from years ago that are great. But looking at the new Tom's differential catalog. It appears that I could buy a 30 spline Tom's posi and their super yokes. Is my thinking correct?
