The reason that the button popped off is because the button was pressed on at the factory where it was made and though use, vibration, etc., has loosened and is no longer tight. The rod that it presses on to has ribs that no longer hold. In the past, when I was restoring these handles, have found some that this was a problem so I always put a dab of JB Weld in the hole before pushing it on.

Hello Jeff,
Sorry for not getting back right away. I just joined the corvetteforum. I had problems with my login. Also not sure how to do a PM. I would be interested in a spring. Let me know on the price. Would you suggest to glue the spring inside the button?

Henry,
I sent the spring by mail today. I was surprised to be charged $4.95 for that small little package but that's the world we live in now. I would greatly appreciate for you to send me re-imbursement for the shipping. If you could, send me a check to the return address on the package. Sorry to have to ask this but I thought it would cost maybe a dollar-not.

Hello Jeff,
I received the spring today. I wrote you a check and is ready to mail tomorrow. I have another question. I put back the button into the handle without the spring. Is there a safe way to get the button out of the handle? Thank You, Stay Safe, Henry D'Amato
If the spring jumped out it means that the hole that the rod goes into has been slightly enlarged and it may be possible to pull it off. I would somehow protect the plastic and grab it with a vice grip and pull it off. I have never done this so I am not saying that this is possible or not.
Jeff
Hello Jeff,
I was thinking about using a couple of small screwdrivers and carefully push, left up and work out. I can pull on the button to set the emergency brake without the spring, so the button is hanging up to something inside the handle. Henry D'Amato
It's not hanging up on something- it's pushed onto the rod that holds it in. Using screwdrivers to pry it off will only damage the chromed plastic tip. Only by somehow grabbing it and pulling it straight out is the only way with the handle in the car. I have no idea if this would work as I have never done this. I drove the button out by removing the whole plastic handle in a way that forced the button off the rod. Not for the faint of heart or the inexperienced.
Jeff
Thanks Jeff for your wisdom. I am going on vacation for a couple of weeks. I will try duct taping the button and carefully use a vise grip to pull the button straight out. I will try it when I come back from vacation. I will let you know how it works out. Do you have any spare buttons? Stay Safe, Henry
Dusky,
I have a box full of these springs and would be happy to send you one. PM me your address and I will get one to you. I used to restore these handles and still have a collection of parts. When you get it, raise the handle as far as it will go (lessens the pressure on the spring) and just use a dab of JB Weld inside the button. Put a piece of tape across the button to be sure it stays put.
Hello Jeff,
I will take you up on this offer for my 73'. I am looking for a spring and button. New here and can't figure out how to DM you directly, would you mind sending me one?

Jeffstuarts, I still don't have the ability to send you a private message, maybe because I am so new? I added you as a contact, hopefully that works, apologies again.

I realize this is an old post, hopefully you'll still see this. My brake handle on my '68 didn't have a spring under the button, and I've found one that might work, however the "Lock pawl" that engages the gear doesn't drop down to engage. I don't know, but would assume there is supposed to be a spring putting downward force on it, but I've never had one apart to see how it works.
Any insight would be appreciated.
Also, could you describe exactly where to put the JB weld so as to not interfere with the button operation?
Roy68
I don't know if you got my PM but the spring has been sent. All I want is the postage- $5 (I can't believe that it cost that much either but it is what it is). My address is:

Hello Jeff. I'm in the same boat. Button came off, and spring shot into another dimension...nowhere to be found. Happy to send some $ your way (Zelle, Venmo, etc.) if you happen to still have a box full of them. Please advise if you have one. Much appreciated....
