As for rotation yes, even when coil is inserted into cap the movement is about the same .035.
Joe: did your OE coil also function AOK (with those movements) ??

Yes,
The reason I changed the Coil was during a cap & rotor replacement red side wire broke at duel male terminal.
Replaced many-many years ago with a USA made Standard DR32

JMO No EE here, but the laminated ferrous steel "frame" is the "core" and, so long as core extends thru & beyond both ends of both primary & secondary windings, I doubt if either walk or wiggle has much, if any, effect on coils' ability to consistently induce high voltage. YMMV

All this is interesting. my original coil died about 10 years ago. less than a block from my driveway. Neighbour guys helped me push it home. Anyway, even then there was no looseness of the coil on the core. This one has WAY more than 35 thou movement. more like an 1/8 inch.
And oddly, when swapped with a known good one. miss fire went away. Nothing else was changed. Didn't even remove distributor cap.
So. Not clear at what point looseness is to loose. But this one wobbles around like a **** in a sock.
And miss fires under load.

Curious about your fairly new HEI dist. How much (in USD) does it sell for in USA ?

I've seen lots of loose coils like yours, new and used. Being loose does not mean it is bad.

In answer to how much does a replacement distributor cost in U.S. dollars. This is a Proform distributor, purchased through Summit Racing. Advertised as a performance distributor. these are the same people making the G.M. replacement distributor from what I read about 2 years ago.
You can go to Summit's site and check a price. I wouldn't bother. It's anything but a performance distributor. I would not recommend it. Check my thread on getting this thing dialed in. And then the coil fails.
Wouldn't buy another one if it was just 1 dollar.

Oh, I didn't want one. Just a reference point for what may have drawn buyer to a good buy.
I'd just refurb an old GM dist.
