Request help to identify engine block #361959...427??
I am unable to identify a Chevrolet engine block with casting number 361959. The block is dated 1975 (J1575)on the right rear above the bellhousing. There is no HI-PERF on the block..only a "P" near the casting number. My old trusted "How to rebuild your big block chevy" reference book does not list this block number as a big block chevy. The current owner of the engine is representing it as a 427...but he has no proof.

I have it listed as a 454 short deck built from 1970-1976. The "P" stands for passenger, implying it came in a passenger vehicle (non-Vette).

I think I too have a similar block in my 1965 Corvette race car.
#361959 although the 1 is pretty hard to make out. Then it looks something like GMMO T now I assume this means mine was a 454 Truck motor.

You can pretty much assume it is a 2 bolt main, unless it is an over the counter high performance engine..
also assume it is a 454 and not a 427. you would really have to open it up to check the stroke. Some would challenge me on this but who would swap a 427 crank into a 1975 big block manufactured as a 454 ?.. they quit making them in 1969, except for warranty and over the counter. therefor it is most likely a 454.
the 'T' stands for truck and the 'P' stands for passenger, although this usually means nothing. there were corvette T engines and truck P engines. you would have to read the broadcast code to determine what the engine came out of if it was a production engine and not over the counter.. and if it has not been rebuilt and decked.
those engines had dished pistons, low compression, weanie camshafts, mostly cast cranks... but easy to build to much higher horsepower and torque.
look harder for the 'hi perf' i bet you will find it.
