I replaced the shifter linkage in my 1980. I now have some play where the cable is mounted down in front of the shifter.
As you can see from the pictures, the cable now moves forward and back some in the mount. I don't remember the original one having play in it. I will say, I don't really remember how the original fit. I've already tossed it so I can't check it.
Doe the original have play in it like this?
Did I get a bad part?
Have I installed it wrong?
Is there something that wedges in it to take the play out?
I can't seem to get it adjusted right with the play in it. When it goes forward, it goes into park. When I pull it down to drive, I have to go past to 2 and then back up to 3. The play let's it stay in drive and not slip up into neutral.
Could you give me the measurement distance from the fordward end of the shifter bracket to the center of that shifter cable "hole"? I'm going to have to make hole in my tunnel so I thought I'd ask.
Slot is way too wide as you've figured out
Here's more or less what they should look like
If you're going to shim, I'd be tempted to shim between the clip and inside of the bracket. That's assuming that the shoulder on the cable is in the right place of course.

In the process of installing this cable, I managed to damage it and now I need to purchase a new one. Any advice on how to get the right one this time? Link to one that doesn’t need shimmed? Any way to tell if it’s right or not? Certain manufacturers better than others?

I just bought one from Zip for my 77. Lots of the ones on ebay only have a tiny plastic zip tie securing the rubber boot at the trans end, to the cable.
Zip's is held on by a piece of metal crimped on to the cable. Hopefully it lasts longer and it dont let go.

It's about 2 1/4". But I wouldn't trust me and who knows if Chevy could have built the same thing twice back then.

There should actually be dimples on the tunnel marking where the center hole and the 3 bolts were to be drilled. Center was 2" IIRC

In case others look at this. I ended up ordering the Pioneer CA1145 cable. It's the one that has a metal piece holding the rubber boot instead of the the zip tie. It seems to fit better and doesn't move. Maybe I just learned how to install it properly on the second try. Anyway, I would recommend the Pioneer.
