I'm considering the Tremec 5 speed conversion for my 79. Nobody posts prices and they want all of my info before they "might" give me a price and usually this means that someone will be calling you constantly. I just want to know what it's going to cost. I'm looking at the kit that comes with flywheel, clutch, trans, driveshaft, some wiring and other small parts. Just an about cost or if you've done it what did it cost you?
Everything is a little different per year of car. Look on E-Bay for kits . Anywhere from $ 4000 -$6000 including driveshaft , etc. I bought my transmission off E-Bay ,and outsourced the other parts locally. Do you have a manual already ?
The splines are different on Tremec than factory for the clutch. You also need to offset the shifter to fit in the hole correctly. One of many reasons why they want info. Usually they just send an e-mail back versus calling.
My Silversport TKX cost me $4247 delivered. No clutch. The trans was listed as 2795 by itself, the special C3 shifter was 400, etc. All the other bits and driveshaft were included.
My SST kit was $5200 in 2019 for my C2 and included everything you listed, plus a 1350 series yoke and driveshaft to bolt up to the Ford 9”. Basically everything from the crank flange on my 540hp Blueprint 427 sbc to the diff input yoke.
Go to American Powertrain Website and you can price it all out as you want it. I have bought one kit from Hurst Driveline (no longer in business) for a 55 Chev and the last kit from American Powertrain for my 73 Corvette. No bugging calls and answered all my questions when I called them. I installed them both myself so no labor charges. Just the price they posted on their website. I am glad I went with their kit as the shifter is right where it needs to be and the drive shaft was right on target. Also when you get it all from one place you have one source to deal with and no finger pointing back and forth on what works and doesn't work. It saves a lot of headaches and is worth the money.
Silver Sport will not bug you at all. They have a waiting list. Talk to them and they will email you a line item quote showing everything and each line is priced. Pick and choose from the list. You can use the list and try to find the items at a best price if you want to.
All the Tremec distributors buy the standard trans and manufacture their own shifters, driveshafts and install kits. Here is a shot of the custom made SST C3 shifter, which IMO is the best engineered shifter in the business. It is designed like a Hurst competition Plus, rugged. Others that I have seen include one heavily loaded shifter screw, which can easily come loose. I'm not gonna deal with that.
SST. I sent an email with everything I needed and they sent back within a day a line item quote with everything needed. I have ordered several of the 5 speed kits from them. They are easy to deal with. The cost is around 5000 as said in above posts. There are options that can drive the cost up also if you want them. Also consider the rear gears. You really want a 3.55 or 3,70 rear. Others have been used but I have found for the average street car this ratio works the best.
A few years back I bought a T56 out of an older Camaro SS for $1200 at a swap meet, picked up odds and ends here and there made the shifter adapter by mocking up a cardboard prototype, took it to a friend who welded one up, I maybe have $2200 total into it, no problems at all.
