on my 81 i have a power steering leak coming from my control valve and a little one from my cylinder. i looked in my ecklers book and see that they have a rebuild kit for both the valve and the cylinder. my question is how do you get the old seals. is it a interferance fit, and should i just say forget the rebuild kit and get a new one. thanks :steering:
Re: 81 steering control valve and cylinder question (gravismaximus)
I bought a Remanufactured Valve & Cylinder from Vette Brakes Inc. 5 years ago and it is still leak free and works perfect. If memory serves me right, they had a deal that included ALL new hoses, the correct fluid and the valve & cylinder for a great price. They had the best warranty at the time also.
Re: 81 steering control valve and cylinder question (gravismaximus)
There have been a number of posts regarding rebuilding the valve
and cylinder. Results have been mixed. When I have needed to
replace the valve and cylinder I have opted to purchase a new cylinder
from my local GM dealer as they are still available. The control valve
is also available from GM but the price is around $300. I purchased
a new one (manufactured by Stainless Steel Brakes) from Zip products.
In a little over a year it started leaking. Zip products was nice enough
to still replace it under warranty. The customer service rep said they
have more returns with the new vs. rebuilt valves so I went with the
rebuilt one. So far no leaks.
Zip is also very quick to refund the core charge which is $75 on the
control valves.
Have not had any problems with the new GM cylinders leaking and have
installed several on different cars in the last several years.
