Default Water pump

I have a 73 stingray and it has a zz4 350 motor in it. I want to replace the water pump. The pump that is on it I believe is the original 73 pump. Cam I use a standard short pump ?

yes, but Not any short pump, use the standard "vette" short pump for your year vette. It matters.
However, fact that it's a ZZ4 is of zero consequence.

so take a set of calipers to the parts store. if the pump has a 5/8ths shaft diameter, it is the wrong pump. ours is 3/4 inch diameter.

Everthing that I am replacing is attached to the newer motor not the older car. I could understand if I were replacing one on a 73 motor.

as long as everything that came with the ZZ4 was removed and replaced with the 73 corvette stuff when it was installed.

When in doubt take the old one with you.
remember to check the plugs and you may need to put a bypass nipple on the new one, use the old one if good or get a new one.

So I am also replacing the power steering pump. And new alternator and have just in stalled a new a/c system in it. So all pumps. Pulleys and equipment will be new.
So that’s why I’m a little confused in why I would put old style stuff on a new style motor.

Sounds like a great way to go! Your system will reward you with great looks and performance.

I wish they still made the engine belts like they "used" to. I got tired of mine squealing going down the road. It was the P.S. belt that would get loose the most often. I have a simple big block, it has Power Brake and Power Steering a 120 amp Alternator BUT no air conditioning.

Did you stick with Factory parts or replicas versus going all out with one of the aftermarket Billet Companies? When I first rebuilt my engine I went and bought used Original parts at Corvettes@Carlisle for as many as I could get that looked "okay". I even bought a few new replicas from Paragon. I ended up with a very warm running engine so I looked it up and they indeed sold me the correct Water Pump Pulley but it had been replaced under a recall on the 427's in January of 1968 with one that spun the water pump a good deal faster. Those things are expensive. I guess I got what I asked for.... Lessons learned

I finally after a decade of ownership switched my 427 to a March Serpentine Pulley system (minus the AC) and swapped out the steering system for a Steeroids Power Rack and Pinion. One belt is the way to go. It may not look right but it works great.

Why do they use that 90* Hose above the water pump? What does it do that is beneficial? I have had mine plugged off for years.
Best regards,
Chris

I did not see this in your earlier posts.
All bets are off if you want to redo the 73 system.
The zz4 has nothing to do with original belts and pulleys.

I see the 1 belt serp was mentioned.
Quite a few go that route and I think there are kits and even cars stock listed that use a serp and can be attached to you car.

All OE BBC have that 90* ... WHY ? because it's THE (external) Bypass Circuit.
FWIW, All sbc have an Internal bypass circuit; that is Until the advent of Gen 1e, that final iteration of iron-head sbc arrived about 1996 aka L30 (Vortec 305) and L31 (Vortec 350).

OE Gen 1e sbc have no Internal Bypass holes drilled thru block (as Gen 1 sbc do); so Gen 1e sbc do have a small hose between top of pump & front of intake ... in very same manner as OE BBC ... bypass circuit.

WHAT For ?
Bypass Circuit helps prevent air lock and helps circulate small amount of coolant around t'stat Before & Until coolant begins to warm; when t'stat begins to open.

OTOH
A drilled hole or two in t'stat's flange will often suffice as Bypass.
