I'm contemplating putting flowmaster exhaust on my car to give it a meaner sound. Though, I don't want something so loud that it will be obnoxious to people outside the car and will resonate inside the car. (still want to be able to hear my stereo!)
On the flowmaster website I see there is a 30 series, 40 series, and 50 series. Anyone have any advice or experiences you can share with me?
I run 40's with an H-Pipe and 2.5 duals and I love the sound.....It is not too loud unless you are ON IT :reddevil Then I want it loud....Are you running Headers as well??
Right now, my exhaust is all stock. The car has 100k miles on it, and it's the original exhaust.
Depends on what you want.if you are gonna keep it stock..You probably could just switch mufflers and get some sound change but not much...Are you going to modify it at all.....

Re: Flowmaster 30 vs 40 vs 50 ??? (DaddyO)
I had been thinking about the 50 because I don`t want the exhaust to be so loud when going down the road I can`t hear the radio or the person next to me. But I do want to hear the exhaust when I get on it. I bought and installed an Allens stock exhaust system and it sounds pretty nice, got a low rumble to it at idle.
I have true duals on the car with the Flowmaster Delta 50's, 2 1/4 inch pipe, dual cats and an H-pipe crossover. My engine is stock. With the low HP Flowmaster recommended smaller pipes os that I didn't lose any low end torque. The set up is supposed to be able to flow up to about 375 HP.
Here are pictures with a sound clip. http://home.attbi.com/~jchadwick/exhaust.htm
There is a resonance at about 1500 rpm but other than that they are not any louder in the car than the 25 year old mufflers that I took off, though people tell me that outside the car they sound sweet. The Delta's have a third chamber and are supposed to be quieter than the other Flowmaster mufflers.
If I had to do it over, I would do the exact same thing.
I'm not planning to modify - keep it as stock as possible. Just want to beef up the sound!
Cool...Also a lot of guys have chambered exhaust...If you are gonna leave it stock...that may be a way to change the sound easier.....Allens and Mid America both sell a kit that will "Bolt - ON"
I have had 40's on my '72 (see mods below) for about a month...and they are too damn loud! I'm taking them off this week and replacing them with Dynomax turbos, which have a higher CFM rating and have been described as "quieter" than Flowmaster 40's. This is relative of course, because I would now NEVER use the word quiet in the same sentence with 40's!! If you want aggressive tone, the 40's deliver....but still hear the stereo??....NO WAY!! I now wear earplugs in the car, because with the sound and resonance I am dizzy when I get to where I am going! Hope this helps.
I am glad you started this topic, I was thinking of doing the same thing on a 72 big block vert. I want some more sound, but not alot. I too was thinking of trying the 50 series and start with using the existing system.
I have the 50s with headers and 2 1/2 inch pipes that were custom bent. I was going to go with the 40s but the shop (Flowmaster dealer) talked me out of the 40 and into thte 50s. I'm glad he did. The 50s are plenty loud. I did not want to call every cop in town when I got on it. I have had plenty of compliments on the sound of the car. The Vettes have no tailpipe on it so it is louder than say a Camaro with the same type of mufflers. I also have a H pipe in mine. Slight resonance about 1500 rpm but no bad at all. Mufflex in Trenton did my exhaust. Not the cheapest guy in town but a quality job.
It was 600 for the pipes and mufflers and install. Like I said not the cheapest but the system is sturdier than the stock system and I had him make the square outlets go from 2 to 2 1/2 so there was a little custom work involved. He does a lot of race and high performance work. He has a photo album of a lot of cars he has done. Talk to Denny the owner

Agree w/ Gordan, a good summary. Chambered exhaust is restrictive. Dynomax are very good & rec.!

Do you happen to know the cfm ratings for both mufflers? I have the 40's on now (see my sig for my setup) and I love the sound, but then again I probablly like it louder than some of the older guys :p: :jester . I also have a 3 month old pair of Dynomax super turbo's on my shelf though.
