Default 1980 C3 gauge problems

Feels like this could be a ground connection issue but i wanted to just run it by to see any of you had similar problem. When I turn the instrument panel dimmer ON, oil pressure, voltage gauge goes to zero. When dimmer is off, back to normal operating range. Is there a main ground connection for the headlight switch that connects to gauge cluster?

Yes it sounds like a classic ground problem. If a 80 is wired like a 82 the cigarette lighter and the center instrument cluster shares the same ground splice. If you push in the cigarette lighter and the gauges don't drop the zero it's most likely the connector at the center instrument cluster not making good contact with the printed circuit board. If the gauge is do go to 0 when pushing in the cigarette lighter it might just be easier to add a ground rather than trace the wiring throughout the whole car.

Thank for the reply and information. I need to get a lighter first. I checked it again today, it's the oil pressure gauge goes to zero and tachometer falls below zero. Where can I add a ground? from the oil pressure gauge and tach ground terminal to under dash ground post?

Well that changes everything being the tach is dropping out also. They are all on the 150 ground bus but not spliced together. From looking at my 82 wiring diagrams there's only one ground for the entire dash and from your description that's most likely the culprit. I don't know where that ground is but it's a solid black wire with a eyelid at the end. If I had to guess it's in the shifter area but look under the dash before you start taking things apart. And of course you can add a ground anywhere along the 150 bus line. To prove it's a ground problem you can run a jumper from the battery negative terminal to the outer body of the cigarette lighter and see if the problem goes away.

BTW, I'm missing the cigarette lighter also.
