Default Speedometer advice

Hi all

Just in the process of getting my 69 ready for licensing in Western Australia.

The last thing is the speedo...I'm sure they'll pick other things to fix.

It doesn't move at all while driving yet the distance travelled ticks over.

We've checked the cables with a drill and the needle only vibrates in one spot.

The left indicator still flashes in the gauge.

How can i tell if it is a faulty cable or if the speedo needs replacing.

Big difference in costs of buying a new speedo vs cables.

Appreciate your help.

Cheers
Nic

If the odometer is working, ticking off the miles travelled, it's clearly the head unit. you either need to have it rebuilt or replaced.

It could just need a good cleaning/flushing out. Mine went absolutely crazy, jumping all over the place. I dismantled it and flushed the stem with alcohol while spinning the shaft with a drill, I cut an allen-wrench and mounted it in the drill. The old graphite ran out of it, and I kept flushing it until I was sure it was good and clean. I sprayed lithium grease into the shaft as I spun it with the drill. I put it all back together and tested it with the drill, works just fine now. Just make sure you take a bunch of pics as you dismantle it, so that you can put it back together correctly.

Drive the car...test the repaired speedometer before reinstalling it into the dash!
