Default 78 corvette rocker issue

Friend of mine brought over his 78 vette saying there’s some strange noise coming from the driver side valve cover. Sounded like hiss noise and burning lots oil coming from driver side side pipe. We opened the valve cover and this is what we found. Pushrod knocked off part of the rocker on cylinder 3. Also there’s a clip looking thing on cylinder 3 and 5 rockers but not on cylinder 1 and 7. How extensive is this damage? For one he needs new rocker and pushrod. Any piston and lifter damage?

funny thing is this motor has 500 miles on it. It was built by some guy he knows with bipolar disorder so he can’t even talk to the guy. Dude is pretty upset.

Let’s see:
  • believe in Santa Claus - nope
  • believe in the Easter bunny - nope
  • Let bipolar dude build my engine - nope
All kidding aside, remove all the rockers keeping all of the associated carnage collected by cylinder and valve. Post more pictures of the head, rocker studs and pushrods. That one picture is not enough, but if I had to guess - wrong length pushrods. Sorry your friend is going through this crap.

Oh, then remove the other valve cover and repair as required.

What brand of rockers? I would guess a valve was miss-adjusted way too tight at first look.

This what happens when you use Chinesium parts, even on a stock engine. I'm with Factoid, probably incorrect pushrods. Look, I hate to say this, but from the amount of trash there I'd say your friend is looking at pulling the engine and redoing it. First thing I'd do is pull the filter, cut it in 1/2 and look closely at what has been trapped.

I'd much rather have std Chevy stamped rockers than cheap trash rollers.

A lot wrong in this picture......starting with that clip.......and then the poly-loc shank being wrong for this......look at the pic and see how the fat part of the poly-loc is almost resting on the rocker? It was binding and eventually the chinesium rocker gave way, pushed right through and that is the tell.......do you have more pics?
Remove all 16 rockers and pushrods, clean and inspect......take photos, lots of them and post them......
Yes....cut the filter open....if there is a lot of debris this is good! It means the filter caught it all which is usually the case.......

I ll ask him for some more pictures. What I also saw was those clips are only on few rockers. 2 on driver side rockers and 2 on passenger side. He called one of the local performance shop today and quest what? He can’t even bring a car in because back log and no lots to store the car. He have to get in waiting list. This COVID **** is ridiculous.

Looks like the remnants of a lock ring. Perhaps they used to be on them all...
