Although the culprit is most likely a failing timing set ... suggest you also install a New balancer. After more than 50 years of heat, oil, ozone & big block torque, its rubber is likely weak. And, if not already failing, that's probably not far off. YMMV
* if originality is paramount; you can have your old damper rebuilt by vendors such as Damper Doctor.
